Lady Wildcats Earn First Win of Season in Home Opener
MILL HALL-The Central Mountain girls soccer team picked up its first victory of the year on Saturday, defeating Bald Eagle Area 2-1 in the home opener.
The Lady Wildcats came out energized, with freshman Reese Warner scoring her first career goal in her varsity debut to put CM on the board. Just 20 minutes later, fellow freshman Lily McGonigal doubled the advantage with a goal of her own in her first varsity start. Harper Conklin assisted on Warner’s opener, while senior captain Kendall Veltri set up McGonigal for what proved to be the game-winner.
Bald Eagle Area cut the deficit in the second half, but Central Mountain’s defense stood strong to preserve the lead. Late in the match, Leah Karstetter nearly added to the total with a long-range free kick from about 40 yards out that sailed over the keeper but was waved off as an indirect attempt.
The 2-1 win marked a step forward for the Wildcats, who showed noticeable progress in their early-season play. Central Mountain will look to build on the momentum when it travels to Penns Valley on Saturday, August 30.
