Words of Grace

By Rev. Mahlon Nevel

“I will bless you,” the Lord said to Abraham, “and you shall be a blessing.” (Genesis 12:2)

We praise God because all blessings come from him. He has blessed us through his Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. We are blessed for Jesus’ sake.

The Lord blesses us so that we might bless others. Ira Wilson, in his hymn, gives us this prayer: “Make me a blessing, O Savior, I pray, Make me a blessing to someone Today.”

A young man with a serious spiritual problem, called upon Phillips Brooks for help. He had thought about his problem hundreds of times, and Knew just how he would phrase it when he met with the pastor.

After a glorious hour of fellowship with Brooks, he left with a radiance in his soul. When he got home, he suddenly remembered that he forgot to ask about his troublesome question but he didn’t care. What he really needed was not a solution to a special problem. It was to be blessed in the presence of someone who had been blessed by God. That was contagious.

God had blessed Phillips Brooks with spiritual blessings in Christ, (Ephesians 1:3) and used him to be a blessing to that young man.

“If this bit of earth may be Stronger for the strength I bring, Sweeter for the songs I sing, Happier for the path I tread, Lighter for the light I shed, Richer for the gifts I give, Purer for the life I live Nobler for the death I die Not in vain have I been I”
