Words of Grace

By Rev. Mahlon Nevel

“Without me you can do nothing.” These words were spoken by Jesus to his disciples in John 15:5.

The Lord was describing a vineyard. He was the vine, and the disciples were the branches. Apart from the vine, the branches could not produce fruit.

What are we without Jesus? What can we do without Jesus? We are nothing, and we can do nothing.
But what a difference the Lord Jesus makes in our life. “I can do all things through Christ,” the apostle Paul wrote in Philippians 4:13, “who strengthens me.”

In Paul’s Epistle to the Ephesians, he reminded them of what it was like before they came to the Lord. At that time they were “without Christ,” and “without God.” (2:12) And as a result, they had “no hope.” They were without hope. That was in the past, but What about now?

“But now in Christ Jesus you who were far off are made near by the blood of Christ.” (V.13)
Without Him, written by Mylon LeFevre, ends with these Words: “Without Him, how lost I would be.” Here’s how that song begins:

“Without Him I could do nothing; Without Him I’d Surely fail. Without Him I would be drifting Like a Ship without a sail… Without Him life would be hopeless; But with Jesus, thank God, I’m saved.”
