Optimist’s Roundtable

By Martha Sykes

What is humility? A dictionary will tell you it means” not proud or arrogant; low in importance, rank, or position”.
A good example of this is when the Lord of the universe, on the night He took Thank you bread and broke it, took a servant’s apron, tied it on His waist, kneeled before the disciples and washed their feet.

Jesus said,” All who exalt themselves will be humbled, and all who humble themselves will be exalted.” Christ said that He came to serve, not to be served.

In scripture, if we look at the Pharisees, they wanted others to see them special and treat them as though they were closer to God than anyone else. They wanted others to be impressed with their piety and impressed with their holiness. They wanted others to think they had some special bragging rights that common people lacked. Jesus talked about how the people that they were not to do with the Pharisees did. He said that they did not practice what they preached. That advice is meant for us too.

Sharing a poem this week:

The world that we are living in
Seems very dark today
We need to turn to Jesus
And listen to words He did say

Humble ourselves and serve Him
Help someone where you are
Tell them the story of Jesus
Both near and even afar

Be a leader for Jesus and live your life
As humble as you can be
Don’t brag or exalt yourself
Don’t be like a Pharisee

Trust in the Lord and live each day
With love and hope in your heart
Our world can be so much brighter
If we all just do our part.
