Optimist’s Roundtable

By Martha Sykes

“The Lord will work out His plans for my life, for your faithful love, O Lord, endures forever.”

These words from Psalm 138 are always a reminder that, no matter what we go through, our Lord is with us.

Last week it was thirteen years that my life has changed because of the passing of my husband, Wesley. Every day,of course, I think of him, but I always thank God that He has been with me through it all. This has been a journey that I would not have survived without my faith, my family, and my friends.

My life certainly has changed, but so have many other people’s lives around me. My situation has helped me to be there for other people that go through grief. God has given me that strength to continue living and serving Christ and has given me so many opportunities to share my faith with so many.

Just as Jesus told His disciples, when He was leaving them, that the Holy Spirit would come and comfort them, and be with them, He also wants us to know that in our hearts.

As Jesus walked on this earth, He had so much compassion for the sick, the hurting, the weak, and those who were grieving. He even wept over the loss of His friend Lazarus so He understands our tears when life is tough. Scripture tells us that God sees our every tear. He is aware and understands our human need far better than we do, so our prayer can be that God will give us greater compassion so that we can help others.

A favorite author that I have heard speak at Women of Faith conferences, by the name of Luci Swindoll, has said, “Lord, how can I encourage someone today? Show me, then help me to do it.”

God will help us no matter what we go through. On my faith journey, I have been encouraged by God’s grace and faithfulness as I realize the many blessings in my life. I would encourage all of you to trust in Jesus and His presence through the Holy Spirit. You will discover a limitless hope in the promise of eternity.
