Words of Grace

By Rev. Mahlon Nevel

There are two kinds of hearers. Jesus said that there were those of his followers who heard his sayings, and did them. (Matthew 7:24) There were others who heard his sayings but did not do them. (V.26)

The Epistle of James tells us, to be “doers of the word, and not hearers only.” (1:22) It is good. to hear the word of God. It is better to hear the word of God, and do it.

If we are hearers of the word, and not doers, we are like the man who beheld his face looking glass. (V.23)

He saw what he looked like, and then went on his way, forgetting what he saw in the mirror. (V.24)

The Bible is like a looking glass. It shows us what we are like, and what we should be. When we look into God’s word continually, we will be blessed. Don’t be “a forgetful hearer, but a doer.” (v.25)

It was reported in the newspapers a number of years ago that when Mrs. Eliza Kirk of London, England reached the age of one hundred, She celebrated her birthday by removing all the mirrors from her home. The reason she gave for this unusual act was:

“I like to think of myself as I was and not as I am.”

She was trying to forget about what she looked like. She was a forgetful looker.
As we look into the mirror of God’s word, we are being changed into his image by the Spirit of God. (I Corinthians 3:18)
