No. 14 Women’s Wrestling crowned Region 2 Champions; Three Bald Eagles Claim Individual Titles
EAST STROUDSBURG- Behind three individual champions and a total of twelve place winners, the No. 14 Lock Haven women’s wrestling team soared to the National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championships (NCWWC) Region 2 title.
The Bald Eagles totaled 155.5 points, edging out East Stroudsburg (148.5).
Lock Haven finishes with 10 national qualifiers, the most in team history.
Jayleah Pletz (117), Azariah Moore (180), and No. 4 Alyssa Favara (207) all placed first in their respective weight classes.
Pletz took first after a perfect 3-0 day with two pins. Pletz opened the day with a quarterfinal pin in 32 seconds to make her way to the semifinals. The Bald Eagle grinded out a hard fought 9-7 decision to make her way to the finals. In the first-place bout, Pletz soared by York’s Gisele Ramirez, winning by fall (1:00).
Moore opened the day with a pin in 1:50 over Cedar Crest’s Draydon Charman before recording two tech fall victories to push herself into the first-place bout. In the finals, Moore won by decision (6-2) over teammate Lindsay Laws.
Favara made quick work and soared to the 207-pound title with two tech falls. The first tech coming in 46 seconds over Emma Lavalle of York. The standout freshman cruised past Delaware Valley’s Sophie Pollack 11-0 in the finals, needing 48 seconds.
Laws placed second at 180 recording one tech and a pin. Laws won by tech fall over Maya Landefeld (Misericordia) 10-0 (0:30) before picking up a victory by fall over Allison Brandt (York) in 1:33.
Summer Batts (103), Lily Sherer (131), Marissa Rumsey (145), Avry Ryhal (160), and Trinity Monaghan (207) placed third.
Batts picked up a pin in 44 seconds to make her way to the third-place bout. From there, Batts won by tech fall, 12-2, in 2:44 over Delaware Valley’s Jesenia Camargo.
Sherer made her way to the third-place bout against East Stroudsburg’s Zoe Gress. After the first period, Gress had built an 8-0 lead, but Sherer erupted for 12 points in the final period earning herself a 12-8 decision.
Rumsey finished 4-1 with two tech falls and two pins. The freshman made her way to the third-place bout by downing York’s Rebekah Patzke by fall (0:28). Rumsey picked up a 12-2 tech fall in 4:12 in the third-place match.
Ryhal earned back-to-back pins to finish third, the first coming in 1:35 over Muhlenberg’s Kelsey Gelb. Ryhal pinned East Stroudsburg’s Jade Huerta for third, needing only 42 seconds.
Monaghan placed third after a 12-2 tech fall in 4:18 over Lavalle.
Paige Jackson placed fourth at 138, finishing with a record of 4-2 with two pins and one tech fall.
Isabella DeVito and Lydia Knarr placed fifth at 124 and 131, respectively.
