LADY BULLDOGS DEFEAT LADY WILDCATS ON CRITERIA

By Joe Walker

JERSEY SHORE- It came down to criteria, but the Lady Bulldogs of Jersey Shore notched a win over the Lady Wildcats of Central Mountain, as the 24-24 tie score was decided by the criteria of surrendering the least amount of forfeits in the dual meet. The Lady Wildcats surrendered three forfeit to just two by the Lady Bulldogs.

The Lady Wildcats had a 2-1 edge in the bouts that were contested, as freshman Mallory Wunder was trailing in her bout, when she reversed and pinned the Lady Bulldogs’ Carsyn Sobiech at the 1:00 mark of the final period at 142 pounds.

Lady Wildcat sophomore Austynn Falls increased her record to 19-1 on the season she pinned Taylor Ross in 56 seconds of the first period to give the Lady Wildcats an 18-12 lead after 148 pounds. The Lady Wildcats forfeit the 155 pound match to the Lady Bulldogs Addison Dangle to tie the team score at 18-18.

The Lady Bulldogs got a huge win at 170 pounds, as Isabella Gottschall caught the Lady Wildcat standout Kendall Wagner in a tight headlock and recorded a fall in 1:53 of the first period. Gottschall was a state qualifier last season for the Lady Bulldogs and is now 15-1 on the season, while Wagner, a state placewinner falls to 15-4 on the season and the Lady Bulldogs now lead 24-18.

The Lady Wildcats were able to tie the score at 24-24 at 235, when Ashlyn Miller (17-2) received a forfeit win. But the Wildcats had forfeit at 124 and 136, as well as at 155, which gave the Lady Bulldogs the three forfeit wins and the edge they needed on criteria to come away with the win.

“I was really pleased for Mallory (Wunder), she is just a freshman and is working really hard, then tonight she got behind in her match, but kept battling and came back and recorded a fall. Of course Kendall (Wagner) got caught in a headlock, but the Gottschall girl is really good and she hit it tight, but it is something I know Kendall will learn from and work on stopping in the future.” commented Lady Wildcat Dylan Caprio after the tough loss.

“We have not wrestled a lot of dual meets, where there has been this type of crowd and they are just focused on you on just the one mat. I think the girls sometimes have been caught up in that at times and get a little defensive. We have been mostly in a tournament situation, where the big crowd is focused on different mats and you know they are all not watching you. If we can get our numbers up we will be able to focus our schedule on doing more dual meets and thus get into this type of atmosphere,” added coach Caprio.

The Lady Wildcats, 4-9 on the season, will travel to Wingate this Saturday and compete in the Bald Eagle Area Tournament, also competing in the tournament will be the Lady Phoenix of the Sugar Valley Charter School. Action gets underway at 9:30 Saturday morning.
