Clester and Yamashita Take Second Place at Lady Mountie Invite

PHILIPSBURG- Marrin Clester and Kohanna Yamashita both took second place finishes for the Sugar Valley Rural Charter Lady Phoenix, while Olivia Johnson added a fourth place at the Lady Mountie Invitational at Philipsburg-:Osceola High School on Saturday.
The Lady Phoenix finished 10th in the 17 team field with 52.5 points, while the Lady Bisons of Clearfield easily won the team title with 128 points. Shaler out of the WPIAL was second with 99 points, while the host Lady Mounties of Philipsburg-Osceola was third with 97 points. Southern Huntingdon with 94 points and Bedford with 81 points rounded out the top five teams.
Kohanna Yamashita got into the finals at 106 pounds, as she posted an 18-2 technical fall win over McKenna Grove of Huntingdon in the semifinals. In the finals, Yamashita fell victim to a fall by Veda Kephart of Philipsburg-Osceola to finish in second. Yamashita finished 2-1 on the day.
Marrin Clester made her way into the 190 pound finals by pinning Charlotte Paladin of Shaler in the just 30 seconds of their semifinal bout, but then in the finals she was pinned by top seeded Noelle Murray of Bedford in 1:27 of their finals bout. Clester was 1-1 on the day, she had a bye in the quarterfinals.
Olivia Johnson lost her quarterfinal round bout, but then won two straight matches to earn a spot in the consolation finals. In the third place bout Johnson was pinned in 1:36 of the second period by Kalea Day of Chestnut Ridge. Day was leading 5-4 when she pinned Johnson in the quarterfinals and was leading 7-5 when she pinned Johnson in the third place bout. Johnson went 2-2 on the day.
The Lady Phoenix Aaliyah Hopkins (118) and Evie Andrus (124) both went 1-2 on the day, Andrus fell by fall to the top seed at her weight in the consolation falls to just miss placing in the top four. Olivia Clester rounded out the Lady Phoenix squad at 170, as she lost both of her bouts on the day.
The next action for the Lady Phoenix will be next Saturday, January 25th, when they will travel to Wingate and compete in the Bald Eagle Area Tournament.
