Phoenix Fall 37-35 to South Williamsport in Mid-Penn Duals

MONTGOMERY- The Sugar Valley Rural Charter School Phoenix split the 10 bouts wrestled, but a 2-1 edged in forfeited bouts gave the South Williamsport Mounties the edge they needed to win a close 37-35 dual meet over the Phoenix in the first round of the Mid-Penn Conference Dual Tournament.
The Phoenix jumped out to an 18-6 lead, as Tobias Conoway (10-7) opened the dual meet with a fall in 3:12 over Trent Rogers (3-9) at 127 to make it 6-0. The Phoenix were forced to forfeit the 133 weight class, but then Wyatt Conoway (8-9) pinned the Mounties’ Jonah Captuo (4-6) in 5:34 at 139 and senior Jarren McCloskey (11-6) pinned Louis Mazzullo (10-7) in 3:25 at 145 to give the Phoenix their 18-6 lead.
The Mounties Eli White (11-6) won a 19-6 major decision over Dakota Jodun (8-6) at 152 and Cade Lusk (12-7) won a 17-6 major decision over Phoenix sophomore Logan Leland (7-9) at 160 and cut the Phoenix lead to 18-14.
The Phoenix then had to forfeit at 172 pounds to give the Mounties their first lead of the dual meet at 20-18 and then added to it at 189 when Cole Gerber (8-8) recorded a fall over Brandon Galentine (2-11) to make it a 26-18 score. The Mounties’ Jayden Hamm (14-6) then recorded a fall in 2:37 over the Phoenix Lincoln Breon (3-3) to set the Mountie lead at 32-18.
The Phoenix Kodan Mincer was awarded a forfeit win at 285 to cut the Mountie lead to 32-24, but the Mounties Garrett Bacorn (12-5) was able to win a tech fall bout over the Phoenix 15-0 to give the Mounties an insurmountable 37-24 lead and wrapped up the close dual meet.
Taylor Canolina recorded a fall in 1:36 of the first period over Wes Hamman to make it 37-30 at 114 and then Hunter Berry recorded a solid 16-1 tech fall in 4:00 over the Mounties’ Kamden Vanzile to set the final at 37-35.
The next action for the Phoenix, now 4-6, will be on Wednesday, January 15th, when they travel to Loyalsock and then turn around on Thursday the 16th and travel to Mount Carmel for the dual meet of the week.
