THE PHOENIX TAKE SIXTH, MCCLOSKEY SECOND AT MOUNTAINEER TOURNAMENT

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT- The Sugar Valley Rural Charter School came out of the holiday break with a solid sixth place finish in the 15-team South Williamsport Mountaineer Tournament on Saturday, as the Phoenix placed seven wrestlers in the top six of their weight class.
Pleasant Valley won the team title with 194.5 points, while Williamson was second with 179 points and Valley View placed third with 153.5 points. Salisbury took fourth place honors with 134 points and South Williamsport placed fifth with 129 points and then the Phoenix in sixth place with 120 points.
Senior Jarren McCloskey was the highest place winner for the Phoenix as he finished second at 133 pounds by dropping a narrow 1-0 decision to Ivan Baker of Loyalsock in the finals. McCloskey posted a 2-1 record on the day with one fall for the tournament.
Freshman Tobias Conoway went 3-1 on the day and recorded three falls enroute to a solid third place finish at 121 pounds. In the consolation finals he lost by fall to Brent Drost of Elk Lake. Gavin Matter posted a 2-2 mark on the day with two falls to finish in fourth place at 127 pounds. Matter lost by a fall to Victor Custodio of Pleasant Valley in the consolation finals.
Sophomore Hunter Berry also went 2-2 on the day with two falls to finish in fourth at 114 pounds, as he lost by technical fall 19-3 to Jacob Spinner of Salisbury in the consolation finals. Logan Leland was another Phoenix to go 2-2 on the day with two falls, as the sophomore pinned Jacob Dean of Wellsboro in the consolation match for 5th place. Landon Breon rounded out the fifth place finishers for the Phoenix, as he went 2-2 and won his 5th place consolation bout by medical forfeit over Noah Hurtak of Montrose.
Taylor Cantolina (121), Wyatt Conoway (139) and Koda Mincer (285) all earned sixth place finishes for the Phoenix. Conoway led with a 3-3 record for the day and recorded three falls, as he was forced to medical forfeit the 5th place match to finish 6th. Cantolina was 1-3 and dropped his 5th place bout to Ben Hillier of Elk Lake by a fall, while Mincer was also 1-3 onm the day, as he was pinned by Ethan Smith of Elk Lake in his 5th place bout.
Dakota Jodun went 2-3 on the day to finish in 8th place, as lost by tech fall to Kayden Keefer of Loyalsock in the consolation 7th place bout. Brandin Galentine rounded out the Phoenix tournament roster and he dropped both of his bouts on the day to finish 0-2.
