WILDCATS ROUTE CORRY TO WIN COUDY DUALS
By Joe Walker
COUDERSPORT– Although mother nature made for some bad traveling conditions, the Central Mountain Wildcat varsity boys wrestling team made the trip to Coudersport a successful one, as they dominated their way to the team title by handing the Corry Beavers their first loss of the season by a solid 46-19 score in the finals of the Coudy Duals Tournament.
The Wildcats went a perfect 3-0 in the seven team tournament, as other teams were Hickory and Grove City from the District 10 area, as well as West Mifflin from the WPIAL, the host Coudersport and Worland High School from the state of Wyoming. Greenville from the District 10 Erie area did not make the trip for the tournament.
In the championship finals the Wildcats were matched up with Corry of District 10 in the Northwest part of the state. Corry entered the match with an undefeated 6-0 record, while earlier they had won the 33-team Southmoreland Holiday Tournament and placed fifth at the 52-team Panther Holiday Classic.
The finals dual started at 121 and Collin Bauman pinned Owen Anderson (5-3) in 1:23 of the second period to give the Wildcats 6-0 lead. Luke Garman went out and received a forfeit win at 127 and Aiden Kunes bumped up to 133 and came away with a solid 15-3 major decision win over Carson Braswell (7-2) to up the Wildcat lead to 16-0.
Patrick Tarantella kept the ball rolling at 139, as he recorded a 17-2 technical fall in 5:49 over Isaiah Bayle (5-6) and then freshman Hayes Donley stepped on the mat an pinned Devin Merski (0-3) in 4:08 to make it a 27-0 Wildcat lead.
Dalton Perry bumped up to 152 and registered his fall of the day, as he pinned Will Allen (13-5) in just 22 seconds, which was followed by a solid 10-4 decision by Luke Ananea over Cody Proper (15-4) at 160 pounds and the Wildcats led 36-0.
The Beavers then recorded four straight wins, as Lamech Albers (14-6) posted a 16-3 major decision over Dalton McDermott at 172 and Mason Savitz (15-2) posted a 7-2 decision over Bryce Brungard at 189. Kael Albers (15-4) recorded a fall in 1:32 over Kai Fravel at 215 and Owen Nickerson (12-4) recorded a fall in 3:20 over Hayes Henry to cut the Wildcat lead to
36-19.
Even though they lost the last four bouts, the Wildcats had the dual meet wrapped up and Cale Dorman (107) and Gavin Heverly (114) made sure of it. Dorman won a 11-3 major decision over Roman Kafferin (9-5) and Heverly posted a fall over Logan Willis (4-5) in 3:21 to set final score at 46-19 and gave the Wildcats their title.
In their opening match the Wildcats faced the Hornets of Hickory, who entered the tournament with a 5-2 record and took first place of their own 22-team Hickory Invitational Tournament. They later placed in second place at the 52-team Panther Holiday Classic held at Mount Aloysius College.
The Wildcats fell behind 18-3 halfway through their quarterfinal round match with Hickory, as they had Class AA state placewinner Brady Slicker and two state qualifiers in Elijah Scriven and Brody Bishop to bolster a very good lower weight line-up. But the Wildcats came storming back and swept the final seven bouts enroute to a 43-18 win.
The Hornets won five of the first six bouts for their 18-3 lead, as Wildcat sophomore Gavin Heverly won a tough 7-6 decision for the Wildcats only points. The Wildcats then proceeded to record six falls and a major decision to come away with the lopsided win. Recording falls for the Wildcats were Dalton Perry (145), Dakoda Packer-Edwards (152), Luke Ananea (160), Bryce Brungard (189), Kai Fravel (215) and Hayes Henry (285), while Dalton McDermott (172) recorded a major decision win.
In the semifinals, the Wildcats ran away with a solid 54-18 win over an outmanned West Mifflin (4-4) to advance into the championship finals against Corry. In the semifinal win the Wildcats’ Gavin Heverly (114), Aiden Kunes (127), Patrick Tarantella (139) and Dalton Perry (145) all recorded falls. Cael Dorman (107) recorded a win by tech fall and Luke Garman (133) added a major decision win.
Senior Luke Garman (152) won a regular decision win and then the Wildcats’ Bryce Brungard (189), Kai Fravel (215) and Hayes Henry (285) all received forfeit wins to round out the solid 54-18 win and a spot in the tournament championship finals.
The next action for the Wildcats will be on Monday when they host the Indians of Shamokin and then on Thursday evening they will host the Seals of Selinsgrove in a Heartland Conference dual meet.
