$2,500 Grant Helps Restore Pavilion at Western Clinton Sportsmen’s Association, Ensuring Safe Haven for Community Events
HYNER – A $2,500 grant from the Clinton County Community Foundation helped the Western Clinton Sportsmen’s Association secure their pavilion. Named after Jim Nevins, it is a key feature and highly used structure that enables the local club to offer shade and a retreat from the weather for visitors throughout the year.
The twenty 6 x 6 posts had become bug filled and severely rotten over the years to the point that safety was becoming a concern.
Sitting just yards away from their clubhouse, the massive roof offers picnic tables and a welcomed reprieve from the sun or rain when people are taking part in a myriad of outdoor activities. The Hyner Challenge along with over half of a dozen of other races and hikes often sees participants seeking shelter from the elements. Boy Scout groups and survival camps that have boasted 400 participants have also been a common, regular occurrence beneath the gazebo.
The picturesque setting within walking distance from the Susquehanna River is set in the shadow of the Hyner View has also been the backdrop for numerous weddings and reunions, where again, without the roofed shelter none of those events would be possible.
The $2,500 donation provided enough funding for 8 of the 20 posts to be replaced, with the labor coming by way of the WCSA’s volunteers. The efforts have secured the pavilion for the upcoming winter. Members are hoping to be able to secure a similar grant in the future from the CCCF to replace the other 12 posts and be able to offer the use of their property for decades to come.
In addition to all of their external events, the WCSA members are 700 strong as the pavilion enables them a place to set up and prepare their gear when using the shooting or archery ranges.
