Special Meeting planned for ATV use on Castanea Township roads

CASTANEA TOWNSHIP – A Special Meeting at Castanea Township has been arranged for Monday, September 16 at 7 p.m. regarding the use of ATV’s in the township on township roads.
“We received a request from a resident wishing to use their ATV on township roads so we put out a survey online to gauge interest and concerns from township residents,” Supervisor John Gradel said. “The survey was active online and on paper for two months and we received 151 responses during that time.”
The request, which had originally been made regarding the use of ATV’s, has now grown to include motorized golf carts as well.
“The responses were mixed: some for and some against,” Gradel said.
The primary concern of the township supervisors is “what would be the benefit to this?”
According to maps, there are no trails nearby that would help promote the use of ATV activity in the area.
“We think it would primarily be for social and recreational driving around town,” Gradel explained, “half recreational and half utility.”
Of the 1,095 residents in Castanea Township, a response rate of 151 is equivalent to 13.8% of the township speaking out either for or against the idea.
Using ATVs on township roads is not a strange request or occurrence in Clinton County as Chapman Township supervisors voted in favor of this in March of 2022.
The special meeting is planned for Monday, September 16 at 7 p.m. at the township building located at 347 Nittanty Road in Castanea.
