LHU Field Hockey takes down Colgate in shootout
LOCK HAVEN– After a 3-3 tie at the end of regulation, the Lock Haven field hockey team bested Colgate in a shootout, thanks to standout goalkeeping and a game-winning tally by Brooke Hofsass, and with that, the Bald Eagles soared to a 4-3 victory, their first win of the season.
In the first half, Colgate took an early lead four minutes into the game, but Lock Haven responded with two unanswered goals to lead 2-1 just 14 minutes into action. Melanie Bell and Madison Friend found the back of the cage for the first time this season to give the Bald Eagles the lead.
Colgate, however, responded with a 2-0 run of its own to go back up 3-2 with just over 15 minutes to go.
Lock Haven continued to apply pressure and finally broke through in the 43rd minute when Constanza Lopez Zabala scored the equalizer, which helped send the game into overtime.
Lock Haven put forth its best game on offense this season and finished with a game-high 28 (15) shots and a game-high 13 penalty corners.
Hofsass was electric for Lock Haven on offense and fired off a game-high eight shots, with five coming on cage. Hofsass also dished out an assist and scored the game-winner in the shootout. Molly Lynch added quality minutes and fired off four shots and made a crucial defensive save.
Kelsey Felix and Maja Halasz split time in cage for Lock Haven, playing 50 and 30 minutes, respectively. Both keepers were crucial in the victory, as Felix shut out the Raiders in both overtimes, while Halasz turned away three stroke-off attempts in the shootout to earn her first goalkeeping victory as a Bald Eagle.
With the victory, Lock Haven moves to 1-3 on the season and Colgate falls to 0-3.
