LHU Football opens season with 31-9 victory at Glenville State
GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Lock Haven football team scored three touchdowns in the second quarter en route to a dominant 31-9 season-opening victory on the road at Glenville State on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 7).
Fresh off one of their best seasons of the century, the Bald Eagles picked back up where they left off and dominated in all phases of the game to win their fifth straight season-opener, dating back to 2019.
Lock Haven didn’t wait long to find pay dirt in the opener and KJ Howard scampered for a 10-yard touchdown to give the Bald Eagles a 7-0 lead just two minutes into the game.
Glenville State tied the game on its next possession, but The Haven responded with 21-unanswered points in the second quarter to build a 28-7 advantage heading into the break.
Jackson Ostrowsky threw both of his touchdown passes in the second quarter as he connected with T-iar Young for a six-yard score before finding Corahn Alleyne for a 40-yard TD. Jacob Strum rounded out the scoring with his first touchdown run of the season, coming from two yards out.
In the second half, Tony NiCassio drilled an 18-yard field goal to put the Bald Eagles up 31-7.
That was the final Bald Eagles’ points in the contest, however, that’s all Lock Haven needed as the defense continued to dominate and did not surrender a single point from the Glenville State offense in the second half.
Despite the impressive outing from the Bald Eagles’ offensive unit, it was the defense that stole the show. The Lock Haven defense held the Pioneers to just 3.2 yards per carry and 126 passing yards, while forcing a game-high four turnovers.
Lock Haven picked off three passes on the afternoon, with Rocco Daugherty snagging two interceptions and Davien Vernon added another.
Pollard finished with a game-high five solo tackles, including one for loss, while leading the group with three pass breakups. Alfred Manyeah added the lone sack on the day, resulting in an eight-yard loss.
The new-lock Lock Haven offense was also impressive and finished with a game-high 270 rushing yard (5.5 YPR), 200 passing yards and four total touchdowns.
In his Lock Haven debut, Ostrowsky finished 15-of-24 for 201 yards and two touchdowns. Young (50), Alleyne (61) and Cinti (62) all finished with 50-or-more yards receiving.
Lock Haven featured five running backs and were led by Howard, who rushed for 154 yards on 21 attempts in his first start for the Bald Eagles. Howard averaged 7.3 yards per carry, while Strum was nearly impressive as he finished with 57 yards at 5.2 yards per clip.
