Central Mountain Cross Country Teams Aim High with Strong Mix of Veterans and Newcomers
The Central Mountain cross country teams are set for an exciting season, with a strong roster of 27 high school runners, including 18 returners and 7 freshmen moving up from the middle school team. The team consists of 16 boys and 11 girls, while the middle school program is welcoming 7 new runners, 5 girls and 2 boys, all new to the sport.
Head coach Scott Bair has set ambitious goals for the season. After last year’s girls team finished with a .500 record and the boys just under .500, the aim is to win 60-70% of the meets this season. Individually, Coach Bair is looking for his athletes to work hard, compete in every race, and show consistent improvement. The ultimate goal is to have the team peak at the Districts, with hopes of qualifying 2-3 runners for the state championships.
On the girls’ side, Junior Grace Keohane, a returning state qualifier, is expected to lead the way after a strong summer of training. Juniors Calienna Cardinal and Aubrey Eiler, along with sophomores Emma Wolfe and Gabriella Hosley, are also returning and have the potential to make a significant impact. For the boys, Senior Sam Wible and Junior Damien Winner have been putting in solid work over the summer and are poised to lead the team. The team also includes six hardworking freshmen—Xian Deems, Shane Walker, Latrell Walker, Liam Darwin, Myles Winslow, and Cody Cardinal—who have shown promise in early practices.
The off-season was focused on building a strong aerobic base, with optional workouts held three times a week over the past eight weeks. Between 8-11 runners consistently participated, putting in the time and effort to prepare for the season. Preseason training has continued to emphasize aerobic conditioning, speed work, proper running form, and the importance of teamwork and mutual encouragement.
The PHAC conference poses a tough challenge, with several top-performing teams in the state, including Danville and Lewisburg. Despite the stiff competition, Coach Bair’s approach remains consistent: compete, do your best, and have fun.
The coaching staff this season includes Assistant Coach Amy Dressler and Volunteer Assistant Coach Madison Bair, both of whom will play vital roles in supporting the team as they strive to achieve their goals.
With a mix of seasoned athletes and eager newcomers, the Central Mountain cross country teams are ready to take on the challenges of the season and push for success on both an individual and team level.
