Groves Hearing Set for April 21

LOCK HAVEN — A former local resident charged with murder in the July 1991 disappearance of papermill coworker Katherine D. Heckel is scheduled for a preliminary hearing April 21.

Loyd W. Groves, 65, remains at the Clinton County Correctional Facility since his arrest in Beaver County in late January.

Groves had been scheduled for a first appearance in Clinton County Court on Monday of this week but the schedule was altered and the accused is now to appear Tuesday, April 21 at 9:30 a.m. before District Judge Frank Mills for a preliminary hearing at the magisterial level; that proceeding will be held in the large courtroom of the court house.

The former employee at the International Paper plant has been incarcerated at the Clinton County Correctional Facility since his late January arrest in his hometown of Beaver, Beaver County where he had been residing after the Heckel disappearance 24 years ago.

Groves faces charges of first and third degree murder in the case to be prosecuted in Clinton County by Deputy Attorney General Clarke Madden of the Office of Attorney General’s Criminal Prosecutions Section. Attorney George Lepley of Williamsport has been retained as Groves’ counsel.
