Theft/Crime By Deception

FLEMINGTON – On February 28, 2024, a victim identified as a 72-year-old female reported to PSP that she had received emails from an unknown person claiming that she owed them money. She was instructed to go to a Bitcoin machine, transfer money from her bank account, convert it into Bitcoin, and send the Bitcoin to an unknown person’s Bitcoin Wallet. The victim lost $8,500.00 USD. This investigation is ongoing.
The police report for this incident notifies community members about scams of this nature, “Please be aware that no legitimate debt collector will ever have you transfer your money into Bitcoin and have you send them Bitcoin to their Bitcoin Wallet. This is a commonly used scam tactic.”

Vehicle Crash

MILL HALL – A two-vehicle crash occurred on February 26, 2024, on Nittany Valley Drive near Ubel Lane when Betty Gray, 77, of Howard, left her traffic lane and crossed over the center divider. James Obrien, 60, of Shamokin Dam, saw Gray cross into his lane, so he slowed down and attempted to move his vehicle out of the way safely but was unable to avoid being side-swiped by Gray. The tri-axle dump truck Obrien was driving sustained minimal damage, and Gray’s vehicle sustained incapacitating damage to the front driver’s side. Gray sustained minor injuries and was taken to Lock Haven Hospital.
