Firearms course available …

A year or so ago several people said they would be interested in taking a class regarding the safe use of firearms. In last week’s edition of The Record there was an article noting that Western Clinton Sportsman’s Association plans to hold a handgun familiarization course a the Harry Snodgrass Nature and Environmental Center beginning on March 9 at 6:30. Persons interested in the class are asked to contact Butch Knauff at 570-923-1320 or at Butch6@comcast.net prior to March 7.

The course is designed to familiarize those attending the safe handling, storage and use of handguns. It is not designed nor intended to certify or license anyone to carry a handgun. The class will be limited in size and WCSA ($15) is required.

John Curcio thanked …

WWII Veteran John Curcio has learned he is among WWII veterans who are soon to receive an honor from the French in appreciation of his service to help Liberate France during the war. John, who is nearing his 90th birthday, said that while he would like to attend the March 4 presentation in Washington, D.C. he is not able to drive the distance.

Robin watch is on …

Debra Bratton-Proctor, who spotted an early robin last winter, emailed me this week to say she hasn’t seen a robin yet this year. She is wondering if anyone has spotted any robins in Renovo area yet. Although she has yet to see a robin this season, she said her husband said that a coworker at PSU has spotted robins on the campus.

Christmas in July …

You may have been told that Christmas comes but once a year, but rumor has it, not a clue if it’s true, but I’m hearing Renovo may be getting a summer time gift, Christmas in July. The idea is not far-fetched. If the rumors are true July will be a month of weekend festivities. St. Joseph’s festival is annually held the second weekend in July, the rumor is Renovo Fire Dept. may have a block party and fireworks in July, the annual Bucktail Medical Center Music Fest is said to be in July and the Flaming Foliage Festival committee may have Christmas on July 25.

And the beat goes on …

Renovo’s PRR group should be feeling pretty good these days, to know that what started as a move to clean up the town before the Flaming Foliage Festival has turned into a full-fledged effort to improve the appearance of Renovo and the quality of life in the community. An example of the how the effort is continuing is the a move to repair and improve Ontario Avenue. Ryan Graw spoke to the Community Trade Association membership on Monday about the Ontario Avenue effort. He said grants have been applied for to repair the street surface. Plans for the avenue area also include a boat launch and river walk and PA Wild’s Artisan’s Trail.

Another idea in the works in conjunction with the artisan’s trail is an artisan’s plaza, which would basically be an outdoor area of artisan shops, each featuring a different local artist or craftsperson and locally made works.
