County Commissioners recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month

LOCK HAVEN, PA – The Clinton County Commissioners at their Thursday meeting proclaimed October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Their proclamation noted the role Lock Haven-based Roads to Peace (formerly the Clinton County Women’s Center) plays in support of domestic violence victims in the county.

The proclamation urges county residents to support events and programs offered by Roads to Peace. Cheyenne Karichner, Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Educator and Volunteer Coordinator was on hand to receive the proclamation. She invited the public to the annual Domestic Violence Vigil, scheduled for Friday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. at Triangle Park in Lock Haven.

The proclamation:

PROCLAMATION: DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH—
OCTOBER 2023

WHEREAS, domestic violence is a serious crime that affects people of all demographics; and,

WHEREAS, the impact of domestic violence is pervasive, directly affecting society as a whole; and,

WHEREAS, the crime of domestic violence violates an individual’s privacy, dignity, security, and humanity, due to the systemic use of physical, emotional, sexual, psychological and economic control and/or abuse; and,

WHEREAS, during the 2022-2023 fiscal year, Roads to Peace served 433 men, women, and their dependent children, and 24 self-identifying LGBTQ+ people, providing 1,221 hours of counseling, advocacy, and support to victims of domestic violence; and,

WHEREAS, Roads to Peace received 477 hotline calls and provided emergency safe shelter to 62 survivors; and,

WHEREAS, only a coordinated community effort will put a stop this crime;

NOW THEREFORE WE, that the Clinton County Commissioners, do hereby proclaim the month of October 2023, as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Clinton County, and urge all citizens to actively participate in Roads to Peace scheduled events and programs, and to work toward the elimination of intimate partner violence against all community members.
