Wildcats Prep for District Duals

cm-wrestlingSTATE COLLEGE — If nothing else, the Central Mountain wrestling team Saturday gave every indication the Wildcats are prepared to defend their District 6 team dual title in Tyrone next weekend.

The Wildcats were all over outclassed State College, piling up six pins, two technical falls and four major decisions in bringing home a 62-9 triumph. The win put Central Mountain at 9-0 and dropped the Little Lions to 9-6; State was coming off a 45-24 loss to Mifflin County on Thursday.

Saturday’s dual started at 170 pounds and Gavin Caprio (14-1) took down and pinned William Roeshot, one of State’s better wrestlers, in the first period. Isaac Porter (9-4), Loc Long (17-7) and Hunter Weaver (16-7) all followed with pins and the route was on.

Bryce Hanley (21-7) led 1-0 over State heavyweight Jack Vandervort but gave up a late reversal and lost 2-1, CM leading 24-3 after five bouts.

Geo Barzona (17-5) and Seth Andrus (18-6) followed with major decisions, followed by Keanan Bottorf (16-7) with an 18-3 bout termination. State’s defending district champion Anthony Myers would get the home team’s last win, a fall over the Wildcats’ Chris Confer (4-10).

Central Mountain closed with a 5-win rush: Colton Weaver (16-8) with a fall, Emery Watson (16-6) with a major, Tanner Weaver (3-6) with a 17-1 technical fall, Caleb Turner (10-8) with a major and Demetri Probst (21-7) with a first period fall.

The Wildcats had a 27-2 edge in takedowns. After a trip next Wednesday to struggling Shamokin, Central Mountain goes back to Tyrone next Saturday to defend its dual meet title. Likely semi-final opponent will be State College which earned a fourth place seed after Bald Eagle Area (9-4) opted out of the tourney. State will host #5 seed Altoona (5-8) early next week for the opportunity to meet the Wildcats in the semi-finals. State defeated Altoona 28-22 earlier this year.

Mifflin County (14-3) is the number two seed and Bellefonte (9-3) the three seed. The Wildcats already own regular season wins over the number two, three and four seeds. Central Mountain took the title a year ago, defeating Mifflin County by a point. Next Saturday’s winner qualifies for the PIAA team duals Feb. 5, 6 and 7 at the Giant Center in Hershey.
