Phoenix softball looking to improve
From staff reports
LOGANTON, PA – Greg Weaver takes over this spring as the new softball coach at Sugar Valley Rural Charter School and so far, the biggest challenge has been getting his 13 team members outside to get some on-field work.
Through this past weekend the weatherman has allowed the Lady Phoenix to only get one day of work outside. Fortunately, coach Weaver notes, the team is able to practice in the school’s new gym where the emphasis has been on fundamentals and drills. The squad also can utilize the weight room for strength and conditioning. As the coach notes, everyone must know the fundamentals, but it’s not the same as being on the field.
SVRCS softball welcomes back these seniors – Keriston Goldsmith, Lilyann Darby, and Ivy Patterson. Joining them are juniors -Lilly Mundrick and Brynn Swanger; Sophomores – Olivia Clester, Olivia Johnson, and Hattie Cinnamon.
New this year are juniors Emma Downing, Dakota Holdren; Sophomore – Alli Lucas; Freshman – Cheyenne Weaver and Ellie Scarborough.
Coach Weaver is being assisted by Tanya Miller-Mitchell.
Coach Weaver told The Record he is excited to join the program as head coach. “My hope is to instill the love of the game into each and every player. Like other team sports, softball requires hard work and dedication. In order to be the best team, you must respect not only yourself but your teammates, coaches, umpires, and fans. I like to think that the letter T in the word team stands for “together.” While each individual player brings their own strengths and character to the field, it is not until you put the individuals together on the field that they become a team. They will both win and lose as a team but if they learn something new with each game, respect each other, and grow with each experience they are winners every time!” Ultimately, I hope to see the program expand.”
SVRCS is part of the Mid-Penn District Four Conference. The home field is The Lions Club Ball Field in Boonville. First Phoenix game is a home game which will be played on Friday, the opponent St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy of Boalsburg. The team faces a 20-game schedule.
