We Bought a House
And many more projects to go!
By Christopher Miller
The days are growing shorter and the temperatures are beginning to come down from their summer peak highs of 80s and 90s. True, we will still experience the odd days of 80+ degrees like we did Monday, but the climate is starting to stabilize and the days are growing cooler. When this article prints there will only be a week left of summer as we know it.
The past couple of months haven’t really amounted to much, to be honest. The garden has been spitting out tomatoes and green peppers. My orange peppers don’t want to be harvested for some reason. My jalapeño peppers are sprouting like weeds, and the celery is ready to be picked and cut from the stalks. Who knew this little hobby garden would have become so much work and so fruitful!
Aside from the garden, the Fall months also usher in a renewed want to accomplish projects on the house also known as framing, insulation, and leveling floors and ceilings. We are also looking forward to starting some major projects very soon.
Our second floor hall is so out of level you’d think the house was sinking over time. Well I mean, it’s possible that it could be, but the hall needs to be leveled as best as it can so our future children don’t end up with one leg shorter than the other. Can that even happen?
I also have to level a bedroom floor by pulling up the old subfloor and getting right down to the bare wood joists. From one end to the other the room is about two inches off level, and the ceiling is anywhere from a quarter to three-quarter inches off. The goal is to have everything square and level. That is always the goal.
Another Fall project in the works is to demolish and rebuild the old room above the back porch. This will become our new master bath and walk-in closet. Directly below it we have plans to enlarge the laundry room and have it separated by a half-bath. The room was originally a large porch that was enclosed to build another full bathroom that we temporarily turned into a half bath and laundry room. This part of the renovation will require substantial work and strengthening since it involves exterior walls.
Well, we certainly have our work cut out for us now. I just hope we have enough cooler days to accomplish what we have planned to do.
