LHU: Women’s Soccer notches third consecutive win in road contest with Millersville

MILLERSVILLE, PA – The Lock Haven University women’s soccer team (3-0) kept its undefeated start to the season alive and downed Millersville University (1-1), 1-0, in what was the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division opener for both teams.
The 3-0 start for the Bald Eagles marks the best start to a season in 20 years. In 2002, LHU started 5-0 and finished the season with a 16-2-2 record.
In the opening 45 minutes, the two teams looked to be locked into a 0-0 tie going into the halftime break. Freshman Sydney Bolles (Dingmans Ferry, Pa./Deleware Valley) had other ideas and with 32 seconds remaining in the half she notched her first goal as a Bald Eagle to hand LHU a 1-0 advantage at the half.
The second half was a physical battle between the two evenly-matched opponents, but neither side could carve a clear opportunity to snatch a goal.
In the final minutes, Millersville pushed hard for the equalizing goal, but Bald Eagles got tough on the 2021 PSAC runners-up and locked down defensively to bring home the well-earned victory.
Megan Miller (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) started in goal for The Haven and picked up a second consecutive clean sheet while making five saves.
In front of Miller, Sydney Cauffman (Millerstown, Pa./Greenwood (Shepherd)), Leah Jensen (Harrisburg,Pa./Susquehanna Twp.(Concord)) and Abby Burdyn (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) started on the backline and were crucial to The Haven bringing home the win.
The sister duo of Josie Swartz (Mifflintown, Pa./Juniata) and Janessa Swartz (Mifflintown, Pa./Juniata) both played the full 90 minutes for LHU and each notched a shot on goal while playing a key role for the Bald Eagles.
Millersville held a 10-5 advantage over the Bald Eagles in shots, but only a slender 5-4 lead in shots on goal as The Haven made the most of their opportunities to snatch an important PSAC win.
