Annual Tire Collection Event in full swing

by Christopher Miller

MCELHATTAN – Beginning their 20th year of the event, Clinton County Solid Waste Authority is holding their annual Residential Tire Collection Event on Friday until 4pm and again on Saturday from 8am – 12pm at the Authority’s Recycling Center in Wayne Township.
The event, taking place since 2003, has collected over 95,000 tires in the past 20 years.
“The tire collection event this year will probably push us close to 5,000 tires collected and over the 100,000 total tire milestone,” said Michael Crist, Environmental Manager at Clinton County Solid Waste Authority. To put this into perspective, 5,000 tires means approximately five full tractor trailer loads of tires, or 100 cubic yards recycled.
It is what happens to the tires after they are collected that most benefits the environment.
“The tires are taken down to Mahantango Enterprises in Liverpool (near Harrisburg) where they are ground-up and shredded for use as mulch, resurfacing athletic tracks and fields, and playgrounds mostly,” Crist said.
Just about any tire can be brought to the collection for recycling.
“This is a residential collection event, so it is not open to tire dealers, service station operators, repair garages, sale outlets, or similar facilities,” the official rules for the event read.
“Tires from cars and trucks are accepted, but anything larger, or oversized, than normal will be charged an $8 fee per tire,” said Crist.
Thresa Lingenfelter, Environmental Coordinator for the Clinton County Solid Waste Authority/Wayne Township Landfill shared with The Record the official rules for the event.
The following rules apply:
  1. Free to Clinton County Residents
  2. This collection event is not open to tire dealers, service station operators, repair garages, tire sale outlets or similar facilities. Tires from these facilities will be accepted during our regular business hours for a nominal fee
  3. 12 car and/or light truck tires will be accepted free of charge (with or without rims)
  4. Proof of Residency is required
  5. Charges will apply to “Out of County” and Oversized tires

Other recycling events occur daily at the recycling center, such as the recycling of some electronics and appliances.
Unfortunately, no award is granted for breaking the 100,000 tire mark aside from the self-satisfaction of helping the environment and county property owners clean out unwanted tires.
