By Bees O’Brien
FARWELL, PA- Emma Poorman entered the 2022 softball season as a 2-time 1A All State selection as a Utility Player. On Monday afternoon against an outmatched Benton Lady Tigers team, Poorman made a strong case for her third selection as an All-State player.
Poorman overpowered Benton in the circle and at the plate. Poorman would pitch three innings, strike out 8 batters and toss Bucktail’s second straight no-hitter in their dominating 27-0 victory over MPC East Division Benton.
It would be the Bucktail senior’s bat that caught everybody’s attention in the first inning.
Jordan Burrows started things off with a walk, a theme that hampered Benton during the course of the game. Haley Burrows was up next and she hit her first of three singles on the day.
Both Burrows girls scored on passed balls during Mak Wagner’s at bat. Wagner walked, which would bring up Poorman. Poorman would launch a home run shot over the left field fence to score her and Wagner. Just like that Bucktail (2-0, 2-0) was up 4-0.
Benton pitcher Mia Lameroux would have all kinds of control problems throughout her two innings of work. She walked nine Lady Bucks and hit six batters with pitches. Five of those would come in a first inning that saw Bucktail rack up 14 runs on only five base hits, two of which came from Poorman and Haley Burrows. Haley Burrows is now batting a perfect 1.000 on the season at 6 for 6.
Poorman continued to cruise in the circle as she silenced Benton yet again at the plate. Back to back singles from the Burrows girls began another long Lady Bucks rally.A double from senior left fielder Raileigh Isaacs and a single from Matti Mason began a huge hit parade from the hosts. A Mak Wagner single, one from Lily Francis and Mason’s second single of the inning would be followed up by a double from Jordan Burrows as Bucktail scored13 runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Poorman silenced the Lady Tigers in their final at bat to collect the win and the no-hitter. Benton was playing their season opener and dropped to 0-1 overall and 0-1 in the MPC.
Haley Burrows led Bucktail at the plate going 3 for 3. Poorman reached base safely all four times, including her first inning home run and she scored three times. Jordan Burrows had another solid outing collecting a pair of hits and crossing the plate four times. Wagner had a single and reached on an error, scoring three runs and Matti Mason continues to impress at the plate with a pair of singles.
Bucktail has outscored Sugar Valley and Benton by a combined 42-0 and has yet to give up a base hit.
