LHU’s softball coach Shannon picks up 300th win in sweep of Mansfield
LOCK HAVEN, PA – On a historic day Saturday for head coach Kelly Shannon, the Lock Haven University softball team (10-7, 2-0 PSAC East) picked up a doubleheader sweep over Mansfield University (4-10 0-2 PSAC East), 9-1 and 10-2, in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division opener for both teams.
For Shannon, the wins marked the 300th and 301st in her illustrious career as she sits second all-time at Lock Haven. All of her wins have come at LHU since her first year in 2010.
Game 1: W, 9-1 (5 Inn.)
The Mounties opened the game quickly, tallying a run in the top of the first inning, but Lock Haven responded in the bottom half of the inning with three runs of its own. Summer Peters (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) drove in two runs with an RBI-single, and a Mansfield fielding error allowed Peters to score later in the inning to put LHU up 3-1.
Riley McClellan (Granville Summit, Pa./Troy) scored on another Mountie error in the second inning, and Sydney Arrigale (Blackwood, N.J./Highland Regional) launched a homerun as LHU began to pour on the runs. McClellan added two RBIs of her own in the third and fifth inning, and Delaney Good (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg) singled in a run in the fifth. Peters handed the Bald Eagles the eight-run lead with her third RBI of the game to give LHU the 9-1 victory.
Madison Waltman (Turbotville, Pa./Warrior Run) started in the circle and pitched a gem for the Bald Eagles. The sophomore fanned six Mountie batters in five innings of work and allowed just two hits and one earned run to notch her seventh win of the year.
Game 2: W, 10-2 (5 Inn.)
In game two, the Bald Eagles started quickly and once again ended the game in five innings. In the first inning, Arrigale started things off with a bases-loaded walk, and Rianna Trexler (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte) scored Peters with a sacrifice fly to center field.
In a six-run second inning, Peters, Good and McClellan each notched an RBI. McClellan’s triple got the action started and scored Morgan Karasek (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) before Trexler lined a two-run double to push LHU ahead 8-0.
A two-run homerun from Mansfield in the bottom of the fourth cut LHU’s lead to 8-2, but the Bald Eagles responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, and got three quick outs in the top of the fifth to bring home the 10-2 win.
Getting the start for LHU and picking up the win was Jada Schellhammer (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua). Schellhammer pitched all five innings and scattered just four hits while striking out two.
Peters, McClellan and Trexler each led the Bald Eagles offensive outburst with four RBIs on the afternoon.
