Peaceful Black Lives Matter Event Set for Lock Haven Saturday; Mayor Dispels Rumors
LOCK HAVEN – The city’s Triangle Park will be the site for a Black Lives Matter protest Saturday and protest organizers say it will be a peaceful one.
The event is scheduled for 5 p.m. Saturday and is headed by Destiny Urena, a Lock Haven resident who has been involved in two earlier peaceful protests in June.
Meanwhile the community and social media had been sharing reports of possible unrest at the Saturday event or at the nearby Civil War Monument, prompting Lock Haven Mayor Joel Long to take to social media to offer assurances:
There is no truth to the rumors of a group coming to our town to take down our Civil War Monument. There is a protest scheduled but the group has been peaceful and stayed in contact with the City about its intentions. They are members of our community and only want our community to be the best it can be.
Please be assured the City will not allow our monument to be taken down or defaced. Anyone attempting something like that would be held responsible.
Previous Black Lives Matter events on June 1 and June 13 were peaceful, without incident.
