LOCK HAVEN – Somewhere between 150 and 200 area residents assembled in the city’s business district Monday evening for an organized demonstration in memory of George Floyd, the Minneapolis black man who lost his life under the knee of a white police officer a week ago.

The peaceful demonstrators gathered first at the intersection of Main and Jay Streets, carrying signs and offering chants against oppression against blacks. Event organizer Destiny Urena then spoke emotionally from the bed of a pick-up truck, finishing with “I can’t breathe and won’t stop until I can.”

The rally lasted some 15 minutes and the assemblage walked up the E. Main Street sidewalk to near Triangle Park, went into the nearby municipal parking lot, then returned down Main Street, all without incident, as law enforcement officials stood by.

Chants and signs included, “No justice, no peace,” and “I can’t breathe,” the latter the last words uttered by Floyd before his death. Participants were mostly female and mostly white, but attendants were racially mixed.
