We Remember the Fallen

BLANCHARD – Memorial Day this year, thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, will be much different in our area. Traditional Memorial Day parades in Loganton and Beech Creek/Blanchard won’t take place this holiday weekend. The annual ceremony at Boalsburg, birthplace of Memorial Day, has been cancelled. Also not taking place this coming Monday will be the annual ceremony at the Foster Joseph Sayers site at the Sayers Reservoir near Blanchard.

But there is an almost hidden, nearly 75 year old recognition for the Blanchard native who lost his life in the Second World War. Tucked away along the displaced “old” Route 220 near Hunter Run at the Bald Eagle State Park in Liberty Township is a moving tribute to Foster Joseph Sayers. It was erected by the Bellefonte American Legion not many years after the Blanchard native was killed in World War II European combat on Nov. 12, 1944. The monument among a grove of trees can still be seen while traveling the park’s lower road towards the Hunter Run fishing area.
