Geisinger CEO Says Virus Case Plateau at Hand

DANVILLE – In his weekly news media “virtual” update, Dr. Jaewon Ryu, President and CEO of Geisinger, said on Friday that the number of coronavirus patients in Geisinger facilities has dropped below 100 for the first time in weeks.

He said indications are that cases have plateaued across the Geisinger service area and there are “early signs” of a decrease in both positive tests and hospitalizations. But he said the number of cases is “creeping up” at its Danville campus, while stabilizing at Geisinger’s hospitals serving Lackawanna and Luzerne counties where the virus first took hold in the hospital’s service area.

He said as society slowly reopens, it is critically important that safe ways of implementing the process be observed, “that everybody needs to pay attention” to social distancing and related guidelines.

Ryu said Geisinger is in the process of reintroducing more non-virus-related operations, including non-emergency services, in a “measured, planned-out approach.” He said Geisinger has continued to provide emergency services as needed.
