Old School Market Readies for Opening
SALONA – The former Lamar Township School, midway between Salona and Rote, will soon be open for business but rather than educating students will be offering the public everything from maple syrup to jewelry to fresh meat.
The former school, closed in 2012, will reopen later this month as the Old School Market, a flea and farmers market owned and operated by David and Kathryn Allgyer. Ruth Eoute will be the market manager for the year-round facility. The building’s 16,000 square feet will be filled with 60 some vendors for its opening Friday and Saturday, April 26 and 27. Eoute said the turnout for a recent vendors meeting was “awesome”
The building has been adapted for the flea/farmers market setting: the walls between the classrooms on the old school’s east side have been removed so that shoppers can move easily from stall to stall. The large former multi-purpose room will be set up for eating and socializing, Eoute said.
From the public’s point of view, Eoute said, “They will find a variety like they’ve never seen before.” Many vendors will be from the Amish community in Clinton County and the Millheim/Spring Mills area of Centre County. Offerings will include everything from craft items such as hand-woven baskets to bake goods and jewelry. A variety of hot foods, fresh meats and produce will be available.
The opening weekend will be both Friday and Saturday to coincide with the Rote Community Yard Sales. Eoute said for the opening outside spaces will also be available for rent. Hours will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day. Most of the year the Old School Market will be open Fridays only but there will be special occasions when it is open both Friday and Saturday.
Eoute said the facility is handicapped accessible, the old school playground will be kept for children and pony rides will be available.
