FARWELL – It is a very rare situation that you will see in high school sports and especially at Bucktail High School Coaches Mike Poorman and Chuck Cross will not only be able to try and mold this team together this year, they will have another year to follow. Why? The Lady Buck softball roster this season will not have one senior nor sophomore registered. Half of the total fourteen girls on the team are juniors and the other half freshmen.

All the returning players this season are now juniors: Myka Poorman, Sara Kepler, Emily Cross, Tessa Cowfer, Kayli Casper, Emma Intallura and Rachel Goss who did play her freshman year and decided to skip her sophomore year. The seven freshmen are Julie Green, Dakota Werts, Jordan Burrows, Mariah Kepler, Raileigh Isaacs, Emma Poorman and Alexis Campbell. .
Coach Poorman believes that this is the most talent he will have all together on his rosters. “We will be able to move more players around in key positions and feel very comfortable with those moves,” coach Poorman said. He has been waiting for this season to become a reality with his two daughters as both of them will be seeing time on the mound.

Asked who would have the ball for the first game of the season last week, coach Poorman said that Myka has already told him she wants the ball. Myka Poorman is very good on off-speed pitches and junk pitches while Emma is more straight forward with fast pitches and strong. As it turns out, the two Poorman girls split the duties in a 10-0 win over Cameron County.

The Lady Bucks need to cut down on the errors as they averaged six a game last season. Most people will look at the roster and say right away they are young. But do not be alarmed; because most of these Lady Bucks have been playing a lot of off-season travel ball.

With the return of these juniors, the most consistent at the plate was Cross, the older Poorman and Cowfer as Casper, Intallura and Kepler show some power with the bats in some key times during a game.

The big key is how the juniors will aid these freshmen on getting comfortable with the game at this level to have a good season. Bucktail has made the play-offs for the last two seasons. Can this be the start of something special for the next couple of years?

Next up, schedule-wise, a trip to Millville Tuesday, April 2, a 4:30 p.m. start, followed by a visit to Montgomery on Thursday, April 4.
