“Old School Market” Planned for Old Lamar Township School
SALONA – The former Lamar Township School had its sale closing Thursday morning and by Thursday afternoon the new owner was inside, preparing for a late April opening for a farmers’ market to be dubbed the “Old School Market.”
David and Kathryn Allgyer have purchased the school located along Long Run Road midway between Salona and Rote. The Thursday closing came after the Keystone Central School Board had approved the sale for $165,000 in October of last year.
Mr. Allgyer was inside the old gymnasium-stage portion of the brick structure on Thursday, preparing the school building which had closed to students at the end of the 2011-12 school year. He told the record-online the market will be a year-round operation, open every Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. On special occasions, he said, the market will be open on both Fridays and Saturdays. That will be the case for the planned initial opening, Friday and Saturday, April 26 and 27.
The building features multiple rooms for vendors.
The school district had agreed to sell the property in 2017. It had most recently been used by the school district for storage after the school was closed in 2012, students transferred to Mill Hall Elementary School. The sale will return the acreage, including the adjacent “Rote” ball field to the tax rolls. It is understood the Allgyers plan to farm that portion of the property.
