CMMS Students Launch Global Citizenship Campaign to Shoe Ugandan Students

MILL HALL – Keystone Central School District’s mission statement states, “The Keystone Central community will provide an educational environment that develops high levels of academic achievement and promotes respectful citizenship in all students.” At Central Mountain Middle School and Penns Valley School District, students are coming together to put that mission into practice.
CMMS students have combined digital forces with the Penns Valley Intermediate School and Because International to launch a global citizenship project, The Shoe That Grows. A global citizen is someone who identifies with being part of an emerging world community and whose actions contribute to building values and practices. What better than our local students helping students half the world away?
“Our goal is to have students experience the great feeling of giving and not expecting anything in return, become more aware of the troubles the world faces, and how we are so fortunate and to understand and appreciate other cultures” said middle school teacher, Don Mansfield. Mansfield spearheaded the Shoes that Grow project for Central Mountain and the partnership with Penns Valley. “Ultimately, we cultivate the knowledge in middle school students to advance future endeavors.”
Students from both schools will raise and donate money until December 14, 2018, in order to purchase 108 pairs of shoes for 108 students in Uganda and Zambia, Africa.
With a unique configuring of straps and buttons, The Shoe That Grows virtually adjust up to 5 sizes as the student’s foot grows and can last for 5 years. The shoes were created with industry experts to create a simple design with the highest quality materials; compressed rubber (similar to that of a car tire), antibacterial synthetic, and a high grade Velcro. There are no mechanical parts. The shoes are easy to clean and use. Shoes That Grow is the product of Because International based in Idaho.
For only $15, a student in Uganda can receive a pair of shoes. Something as simple as a pair of shoes can make a huge difference in the life of a child living in poverty. A pair of shoes in Uganda helps keep a child healthy, in school, and in a position to succeed. Our goal is to raise at least $2,000 to shoe at least 108 students. If we do not meet our $2000 goal, whatever money has been donated will buy that many shoes and shipping. Any money over $2000 will go 100% to the purchase of additional shoes and shipping. Shoes are slated to be hand delivered January 12th and Mansfield’s wife will be a member of the team delivering them.
