Williamsport Outlasts Lady Wildcats, 12-8

WILLIAMSPORT – IN high school softball, when a team pounds out 5 homers, 4 in just one inning, they likely have a pathway to victory. Such was not the case as the Lady ‘Cats came up short in the final two innings with Williamsport holding on to a 12-8 victory.

While the CM bats were working well as usual, the Lady Wildcat defense stumbled, committed 6 errors against Williamsport which proved very costly.

The Lady ‘Cats got on the board early, scoring 2 runs in the top of the first inning resulting from a base hit by Josie Dershem, a walk from Caitlyn Brush and a 2 RBI single from Madison Knepp. Williamsport answered back with 4 runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to hold a 4-2 lead.

The Lady Millionaires tacked on 3 more runs in the bottom of the second inning to go ahead 7-2.

CM picked up another run in the top the third inning, a solo homer from Morgan Wetzel.

Then in the top of the fifth, Central Mountain put together a home run derby style batting clinic.

With one out on the board, Wetzel pounded out another solo dinger to get things started. Then Skylar Smith and Knepp banged out solo homers of their own. Madalyn Bechdel smacked out a base hit and Alexa Shultz went yard for a 2RBI homer.

When the dust settled, Central Mountain had earned a 8-7 lead. That lead would not hold as the Millionaires responded with 3 more runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth inning to take back the lead, 10-8.

Williamsport added 2 more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning while silencing the Lady Wildcat bats in the remainder of the game.

Brush and Autumn Dershem also had base hits for CM in the game.

Caitlyn Brush went the distance in the circle once more, giving up 8 hits, 5 walks, striking out 1 batter.

The loss takes Central Mountain to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in PHAC play.

The Lady Wildcats will host rival Jersey Shore on Thursday, April 12, 2018.
