Gone in 90 days – one year later…
To the Editor:
Maybe you remember us! Last year we were given 90 days to leave our cabin after 50 years.
Well, our homes are full of treasures and everything else went in the sale. Our memories
are still raw, but healing.
Last summer, we thought of maybe renting a cabin for the first week of trout, and by some absolute miracle we were able to rent the lodge @ Ole Bull. I grew up visiting the campground many times each summer as a treat, never thinking we would need to stay there, or even had a chance to stay in the lodge. What a wonderful experience. First, this is a fantastic campground!! I think there may have been a few open camp sites, but most were full. Lots of people to watch, and visit with. The lodge was a perfect mix of very old, and modern. First time we had a cabin with an inside bathroom, and a shower!
The private playground was our grandson’s favorite. Fishing came second. The weather was perfect for campfires and marshmallows till the storm went through Monday evening. Sitting in the dark with candles and cooking outside was great. Mary, the manager of the park even dropped off a lantern. Two and a half hours later the lights came back on, and we were tempted to turn them back off. We even spent the evenings watching old vcr tapes we saved from our old camp. What memories!
Saturday morning we did return back to the hole we always fished by our cabin, but found they keep the gate locked now, so the area was not stocked. So we fished the swinging bridge area above Cross Forks with good success. We were also very surprised to find what a great area below Ole Bull was to fish. Most of the week we stayed there.
I still check the internet every night for a cabin. We have looked at a few, and love one. But who can afford to buy a second home nowadays? I do believe that this situation has helped us to understand and sympathize with all the families in the country who are losing their homes for one reason or another. We are grateful that this was not our main home, but are still grieving. I still know something good will come from this.
So, if you meet a couple on the creek that can’t stop smiling, maybe it’s us. We look forward to returning to Kettle Creek even if just for a long day of fishing. Maybe a camper could be in our future.
Sincerely,
Sue Weaver
