Optimist’s Roundtable
By Martha Sykes
Well, Christmas is just about here and as I am writing this, I am thinking of many people who are either grieving or going through some tough times right now. Whether you have lost a loved one this year, or have struggled through some sickness, lost a job, or have gone through changes in your life, Christmas will be different this year.
In my spiritual journey, I have learned that life sure does change a lot, but God never changes. He has been my strength and my guide, through the lonely days and nights, through my times of wondering why things happen, and when the news of the world discourages me, I turn to Him.
Memories are a wonderful gift, and as I was growing up, I have many great memories of some very special Christmas mornings. Raising our children and making their Christmas special will always be happy memories. Remembering our Christmas get-togethers at our church in Shintown is priceless. Our many Christmas plays at our little church in Hyner over the years still bring a smile to my face.
Spending time with family is probably one of the best ways to celebrate this wonderful season. Worshiping with fellow Christians, singing Christmas carols, visiting shut-ins, or sending Christmas cards helps to fill the season with joyful times.
As we go through this holiday season, may we all reach out to someone who needs a little more joy in their Christmas. Our community has lost some very special people this year. Let us remember them and cherish the memories that they left behind.
The advent candles that we light at our church remind us that the birth of Jesus brings us hope, peace, joy, and love. My prayer for all of you is that you will find hope through knowing Jesus, peace that passes all understanding, joy in your heart from believing that Jesus is the best gift ever, and the love that God surrounds us with every day!!
