PHOENIX USE SIX FALLS TO DOMINATE MOUNT CARMEL

MOUNT CARMEL- The Sugar Valley Rural Charter School Phoenix finally had a dual meet where there were a lot of bouts contested and against Mount Carmel the Phoenix won 9 of the 13 bouts to come away with a solid 51-24 win over the Tornado’s Thursday night. 

The Phoenix were helped to defeat Loyalsock on Wednesday night by getting eight forfeits, but on Thursday night, the Phoenix won nine bouts and recorded six falls to dominate the dual meet. They also won bouts by technical fall, major decision and did get one forfeit win. 

The dual meet started at 121 and Phoenix Tobias Conoway received their only forfeit win to put the Phoenix up 6-0. The Phoenix trio of Taylor Cantolina (127), Gavin Matter (133) and Wyatt Conoway (139) followed that up with three straight falls to give the Phoenix a 24-0 lead. 

Senior Jarren McCloskey bumped up a weight to 145 and came away with a 16-4 major decision win, while Dakota Jodun then posted a technical fall win at 152 pounds and all of sudden the Phoenix were up 33-0. 

The Tornados got back into the match by winning the next three bouts, as Alexander LeMas pinned the Phoenix Thayne Jefferies at 160 pounds, Elijah Jackson received a forfeit from the Phoenix at 172 pounds and then Eban Jones pinned the Phoenix Brandon Galentine at 189 pounds and now it was a 33-18 Phoenix lead. 

The Phoenixs’ Lincoln Breon then recorded a fall at 215 pounds to put the Phoenix up 39-18 with three bouts to go, which wrapped up the dual meet for the Phoenix. Koda Mincer then recorded the Phoenix fifth fall of the night to make it 45-18 after 285 pounds. 

The Tornados’ Brayden Mirarck then recorded a fall over the Phoenix Leroy Culvey at 107 pounds that was filled by the Phoenix Hunter Berry recording a fall at 114 pounds to set the final tally at 54-21 and improving the Phoenix dual meet record to 5-6 on the season. 

The Phoenix will be back in action this Saturday when they travel up to the northern tier and Williamson High School to participate in the Battle of the Border Duals Tournament. The five teams in the tournament will be Oswayo Valley, South Williamsport, Wellsboro, the host Williamson and the Phoenix. Then on Tuesday, January 21st, they will host Midd West in a dual meet.
