Phoenix Open Dual Meet Season with Win

By Joe Walker LOGANTON-The Sugar Valley Rural Charter Phoenix jumped out to a 22-0 lead and never looked back, as they opened up their 2024-25 dual meet season with a solid 46-24 win over Columbia Montour Vo-Tech Wednesday evening. 

Wyatt Conoway, Connor Ohl, Logan Leland, Brandon Galentine, Hunter Berry and Jarren McCloskey all record falls for the Phoenix, while Dakota Jodun won by major decision and Taylor Cantolina won by forfeit. 

Conoway started things at 145, as he pinned Anthony Albertson in 43 seconds of the second period. Jodun followed up at 152 with a 15-2 major decision win over CMVT’s Fenway Huntingdon to give the Phoenix a 10-0 lead. 

Connor Ohl started the pin streak by the Phoenix at 160, as he pinned Bradley Jones in 1:51 of the first period and then at 172 pounds Logan Leland pinned CMVT’s Landon Hipps in 1:41 of the first period to give the Phoenix their quick 22-0 lead. 

The Phoenix then forfeited the 189 bout, which was followed by another win by fall, as Brandon Galentine pinned Dalton Roth in 26 seconds of the final period at 215 to make the team score 28-6. Hunter Berry then recorded a fall in 1:10 of the first period over Landen Hess at 114 pounds and then Taylor Cantolina received a forfeit at 121 and now the Phoenix led 40-12. 

CMVT’s Liam Bloom stopped the Phoenix streak at 127, as he recorded a fall over Tobias Conoway in 3:13 and then the Phoenix forfeited 133 pounds to make it a 40-24 score. Jarren McCloskey then capped the night off for the Phoenix, as he pinned Christian Levan in 37 seconds of the first period and set the final score at 46-24. 

“For it being our first dual meet I think we looked good, but we did make some mistakes as you would expect in our first dual meet. We will need to go over those mistakes before we go to the Blue Mountain Duals tournament on Friday, as we will see some tough competition there,” commented Phoenix head coach Jason Bilbay after the win. 

The Phoenix now 1-0 on the season will travel to Blue Mountain High School in Schuylkill Haven on Friday for the PM Gauntlet Duals Tournament. There are six teams in the tournament, as joining the Phoenix are the host Blue Mountain, along with Allentown Allen, Pleasant Valley, Tri-Valley and Valley View. Action is scheduled to start at 4:30 pm. 

(NOTE); The Phoenix junior high team hosted the Bucktail junior high and recorded a 39-30 win over the Little Bucks.
