Words of Grace
By Rev. Mahlon Nevel
They were bringing their little children to Jesus. He laid his hands on them and prayed for them.
When the disciples saw what they were doing, they rebuked them. They thought that Jesus had more important things to do than blessing Children.
“Suffer the little children to come unto me,” he said, “and forbid them not; for of such is the Kingdom of heaven.”
What Jesus was saying to his disciples was this: allow the children to come to him, and do not hinder them.
Boys and girls, with their, child-like faith, are eager to come to Jesus. It was G. Campbell Morgan who said that there is not a child who will not come to Jesus unless he is hindered.
Blessed are all those who receive a little child in his name. But woe to those who offend a little child who believes in Jesus. See Matthew 18: 1-6.
Dr. Barnardo, who in his day was known as the great friend of all the homeless children, used to tell this story. A
dirty and ragged boy called out to him in the street one day.
The homeless child had only one request. He wanted to be taken into one of the famous Barnardo Homes.
“But I know nothing about you, my lad,” said the Doctor. “What do you have to recommend yourself?”
The little boy pointed to the rags he was wearing and answered, “I thought these would be enough.”
At that, Dr. Barnardo gathered him up in his arms and took him in.
