By Bees O’Brien
SMETHPORT- In a battle between D9 League Region 3 winless team. Smethport would use quick scoring strikes in the first quarter to pull away from the visiting Bucks in the first half. The Hubbers would never look back.
Smethport began the game behind the running of Jonah Ganoe. The Hubber workhorse would break away on a 59-yard run to the end zone and take a quick 6-0 Smethport lead.
Ganoe was a monster on the night, gaining 195 yards on just 10 carries. Ganoe would reach the end zone on three different occasions on the night. His running abilities, mixed with Bucktail turnovers would be the biggest factor in the Hubbers’ 46-20 win.
One of those turnovers happened on the kickoff following Ganoe’s first score. The Bucks would play the Justin Dunn kickoff as if it were a punt and failed to recover the live ball and Smethport recovered.
On the very next play, Owen Rounsville found Alex Yeager open on a 35 yard scoring strike to build their lead to 12-0. That score was merely just 10 seconds from Smethport’s first score.
Smethport would continue to cash in on Bucktail’s mistakes. Ganoe would score his second touchdown from three yards out following a Bucktail interception.
Smethport quarterback Aiden Tanner would get in on the action in the second quarter by finding a pair of Hubbers for scoring strikes of 13 yards and another one from 24 yards to Rounsville to build a surprising 32-0 lead.
Bucktail quarterback Brody Pentz would have another solid game for the Bucks and his 19-yard scoring strike to senior Gavin Yachymiak would get the Bucks on the board with 47 seconds remaining in the half.
Rounsville and Ganoe would strike in the third quarter to send the game into the mercy rule. Rounsville’s 65-yard punt return for a score was followed by a Ganoe 47-yard run to put the score at 46-6.
The Bucks fought until the very end, mainly Brody Pentz. Pentz would get free on a 37-yard run to get the Bucks into the end zone. Pentz would find Aiden Ditty for a good two-point conversion to make the score 46-14, in favor of the Hubbers.
With 6:44 remaining in the contest the visiting Bucks would score again. Pentz would toss his second score of the night. He found Austin Mosher from three yards out to set the final at 46-20.
Pentz had another big night on the ground for the Bucks. The senior scampered 18 times for 183 yards and a score. Pentz also passed for 86 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Yachymiak caught 5 of Pentz’s passes for 49 yards and a score.
