KCSD Students Collaborate with NASA for Space Mission

Throughout the 2023-2024 school year, students from the KCSD Precision Machining program had a unique opportunity to collaborate with NASA by manufacturing crucial components for the Cubesat Deployer. This deployer, once launched from the International Space Station, will release small satellites into space. These satellites are designed to gather data on space weather, improve internet connectivity on Earth, and more.

The students manufactured a total of 73 loading bolts and 186 stops for the Cubesat Deployer. This task required the students to utilize their critical thinking skills extensively, figuring out how to secure materials in the machinery and how to precisely program the manufacturing processes for NASA’s stringent requirements.

Each student involved in this project received a letter of recommendation from NASA, recognizing their hard work and contribution to the space mission. The success of this collaboration has already led to the KCSD Precision Machining program signing up for the 2024-2025 school year to manufacture more parts for future space missions. This ongoing partnership not only enhances the students’ educational experience but also plays a vital role in supporting NASA’s explorations and technological advancements.
