Lady Bucks give South Williamsport all they can handle in 47-37 loss

By Bees O’Brien

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT- For the second straight evening a team from Western Clinton County traveled to South Williamsport and gave the home team a fight. Tuesday night it was the Bucktail boys falling by a single point to the much larger 2A school and on Wednesday it was the Lady Bucks’ turn to give the defending Mid Penn Conference champions a challenge.

Bucktail came into the contest without leading rebounder Kendall Wagner and she was surely missed. Bucktail would fight on with Wagner on the sideline with crutches.

South would fight off a scare following a first half that seen the small school from Farwell trailing by just 2 points at 21-19.

Bucktail actually led 9-8 after one quarter of play and there was a sense that this team could pull off the upset.

South’s Abby Akers would catch fire and net 9 of her team’s 16 third quarter points and costly turnovers began to mount up on Bucktail. The Lady Bucks would manage 10 points in the third quarter.

A strong fourth quarter start by South Williamsport would begin to give the Lady Mounties some late game breathing room. South’s 10-8 run to close out the contest would set the 47-37 final.

Mak Wagner led Bucktail with 17 points. Eva Sockman would drop in 6 points and Matti Mason chipped in 5 points. Alexis Lowery picked up Kendall Wagner’s defensive presence by grabbing 10 rebounds and dishing out 5 assists.

Akers led South Williamsport with 20 points. Maddie Pinkerton would score 13 points and Ella Moore would score 12 points for a Lady Mounties team that would only see four different players score.

South improved to 3-3 on the season, while Bucktail slipped to 3-3 on the season.

Bucktail committed 26 costly turnovers on the night.

Bucktail will travel to Ulysses tomorrow evening and meet Northern Potter (4-4) out of District 9.
