Council Rock South Leads King of Mountain after Day One

BALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP – Day One of the talent-laden King of the Mountain wrestling tournament is in the books and pre-tourney favorite Council Rock South will take a narrow lead into Saturday action.

The District One power sits atop the 32-team field with 77.5 points, followed by Phillipsburg, NJ with 76 points, Seneca Valley next with 72 points. Host Central Mountain is in fifth place with 68 points and six wrestlers ready for quarterfinal action Saturday at 10 a.m., two more Wildcats still alive in the consolations.

Wildcat head coach Biff Walizer termed the first day for his team “pretty much up and down.” He said, “There are no easy rounds in a tourney like this; you can hit a high quality kid every match.”

While six Central Mountain wrestlers were eliminated in Friday’s second consolation round, Walizer said the first day was good experience for some of his younger wrestlers. He made a point to note that every CM wrestler won at least one match, as was the case in last weekend’s Tom Best Memorial Top Hat tournament. He said he is not aware that any previous Wildcat team had every wrestler win at least one match each in the two season-opening tourneys.

The six Wildcats in the quarterfinals are freshman Derek Keen at 106 pounds; seniors Johnny Shreffler and Dalton Bechdel at 120 and 126 respectively; senior Alonze Henry at 152 and seniors Tanner Riggle and Jake Edwards at 220 and 285 pounds respectively.

Two Wildcat sophomores won their second round consolations to stay alive: Gage Sutliff at 182 and Nick Miller at 195.

Walizer noted Henry’s solid start to his season, stating he’s creating a great story so far. The head coach said both Henry and Keen had to defeat wrestlers seeded ahead of them to advance. He said Shreffler and Bechdel have “turned their game up a notch and are wrestling well,” that Tanner Riggle has come such a long way in his three years as a starter, and Edwards is hungry to repeat as the KOM heavyweight champion.

Other District 6 teams in the tourney include State College in 13th place, Bellefonte 20th, and Bald Eagle Area 25th.

Coverage on therecord-online will begin prior to the Saturday 10 a.m. quarterfinals. The semifinal round is set for 1:30 p.m. and the championship and consolation finals 5:30 p.m. The 5:30 p.m. will be both audio/video streamed on therecord-online.
