‘Boulder Beast’ Announced for Sept. 2016
New 27-Mile Trail Race on Bald Eagle Mountain
LOCK HAVEN — The Megatransect is gone but a new trail race, the Boulder Beast, is set for next September.
Lock Haven City Council Monday night gave its okay for the initial Boulder Beast, a 27 mile trail run through the city watershed area and state land on Bald Eagle Mountain. Jeff Stover of Lock Haven will be the race director, a position he held initially in creation of the Megatransect which had its last run on Bald Eagle Mountain a month ago. Stover said the new race will be held Sept. 24 of next year and will be limited to 800 or so entrants, a number in proximity of those who actually participated in the last Megatransect.
The route will include terrain similar to the Megatransect, including the boulders on the “bald spot” on Bald Eagle Moutain. Stover thanked David and Jeanne Hunter and others from the PA Trail Dogs for their work in carrying out the Megatransect; organizers of that event made this year’s running its final on Bald Eagle Mountain because of a dispute related to trail locations.
City council also gave its approval to the next running of the Frozen Snot, set for Jan. 23 next year, that event also directed by Stover. He lauded council for its support of the outdoor events, noting that current Mayor Jonathan Bravard was among the council members who supported the first Megatransect in 2003.
Registration for the Boulder Beast will open June l of next year, Stover said, and indicated there would be a limit of 800 to 900 entrants. He said a new website for the event, boulderbeast.com is under construction.
