Clinton 10-11 Takes Next Step to D12 Title

East Lycoming Up Next at Volunteer Friday Night

clinton-sb-logoHUGHESVILLE – What a difference 48 hours can make. In both the weather conditions and the outcome as Clinton managed a hard-fought 4-2 win over neighboring District 12 rival, Jersey Shore/GSV.

On Monday, Clinton was in the process of a fifth inning rally with a two-run lead and only one out and ended up on the losing end of the effort because the rule book didn’t come down in their favor.

That all changed on Wednesday evening when Clinton re-grouped and battled a familiar foe to advance to the Dicstrict 12 championship game at Volunteer Stadium this Friday at 8 p.m. for a second opportunity to prove themselves to East Lycoming, the winner’s bracket champ.

“I’m just proud of the girls and how they hung in their and didn’t get their heads down after the loss Monday night,” said Mike Poorman, Clinton manager, “Yesterday we tried to practice and we were rained out again. The one thing I wanted to do … and needed to do … was we kept the girls at the field and we had a long conversation about keeping our heads up and moving on, one game at a time.”

Clinton went to the plate as the visiting team on the night with leadoff batter, Emily Cross reaching first base on a walk, then singles by by Zoe Eck and Myka Poorman resulted in two runs to put Clinton up for an early 2-0 lead.

JS/GSV answered back with a run of their own when Carolyn Wachter scored as a result of a couple of Clinton miscues setting the score 2-1 after the first complete inning.

Then the Orange and Black defense settled in and held Clinton at bay with a three-up, three-down effort in the top of the second inning. Then JS/GSV scored their second run in the bottom of the second after Aubrey Schilling hit a single and scored once more when Clinton had a defensive lapse.

Clinton added a run in the third and fifth innings to finish out the effort while holding the JS/GSV batters at arm’s length to secure the victory.

While Clinton will surely savor the victory, it has a bitter-sweet side to the result as several of the girls on both teams are play on the same traveling tournament teams and are school mates.

“That Jersey Shore/GSV ball team has a lot of great players, I’m excited to get out of here with a win,” commented Poorman on his opponents.

On the night Clinton’s Myka Poorman had five strikeouts while her counterpart, Hannah Saar struck out eight batters for JS/GSV.

Offensively, Zoe Eck, Myka Poorman, Alexa Shultz and Emily Cross all had singles for Clinton. For JS/GSV, Carolyn Wachter and Aubrey Schilling recored base hits.
