Labor of Love …

Wayne Short has recently published his third book relating the history of the Renovo area. His books are massive with volumes of information in each one. To date, his historical facts range from 1866 to 1975. Wayne and his wife Marilyn have been gathering those facts for almost 14 years. Luckily the Shorts are retired because as Wayne said last week, he’s been working for about three and a half cents a day for those nearly 14 years. At that rate, you know they’re certainly not working for the money, but rather as a true labor of love.

Man your oars …

Okay world of Renovo and whoever else… On August 16 the Renovo Fire Department will be having cardboard boat races! The race will start at noon. Boats can only be made out of cardboard, tapes and paints. $10 a team (at least 2 people but up to 3 per boat) All participants must have life jackets. Call 570-295-2846 with any questions and to let fire company organizers know who’s interested.

The fire company’s annual Duck Derby is also set for August 16. Tickets are available by contacting members of RFD.

“Music & Praise in the Park” …

A benefit for the Renovo Library is set for Saturday, July 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the 16th Street Park Pavilion in Renovo. The event is a good old fashioned Hymn Sing featuring some of the old songs our ancestors taught us and some new as well will be held. The Hymn Sing will be featuring various members of the Ericson Family, local talent and sing along praise songs. Everyone is welcome to participate. Just come early to sign up.

A homemade quilt made in honor of Anna and Adolph Ericson by granddaughter Penny Ericson Knudsen will be raffled off. Tickets will be on sale at the Renovo Library, 317 Seventh Street; Moose & Goose Billards, 322 Erie Avenue; and Matt Linberg, 12700 Renovo Road, Renovo.

The cost of attendance is free. A goodwill offering will be passed during the event to benefit the library. Bring your blankets, chairs and voices to help the Renovo Library.

You Rock Kathleen Mackey …

Kathleen Mackey of Renovo, the winner of a child’s battery operated four-wheeler at St. Joseph’s annual festival, has given the quad to a young child who was hoping to win it. Kathleen said she give the little boy the four-wheeler because she believes in “Paying It Forward.” She said she raised three children and went through some tough times. But she said there were many who helped her in some way along the way. We say “thank you Kathleen” for proving it’s the people who live here who make this the “little town with a big heart.”

Camp for women impacted by cancer …

Renovo area women whose lives are or have been impacted by cancer are invited to a free weeklong camp at Yesterdays from July 28 to Aug. 1 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The camp includes meaningful and fun activities such as yoga, Tai Chi, workshops, scrapbooking, meditation, music and more. For more information and to register call Colleen Maher at 215-596-7342 by July 18.

CTA officers …

I’ve been informed I had the list of Renovo Community Trade officer all wrong in a news item last week. The names were correct, but the titles were not. The correct official list is: Ernie Peterson, president; Tim Horner, vice president; Gary Gregory, secretary treasurer. Wayne Short is recording secretary, an appointed position.
Chapman Twp. 195th Anniversary picnic …

Chapman Township will hold a picnic for all on Saturday, July 26 in observance of the township’s 195th anniversary. Music will be provided for the event by Bud & The Dynamics. Township residents are all invited and welcome to bring a dish to share with neighbors and friends. For more information contact township secretary Beth Whitty at the township building.

Fellows you are getting older …

Bud &The Dynamics will be celebrating an anniversary of their own next year, their 50th anniversary as a group. The group was formed in 1965 by drummer Bud Hallberg and guitarist, singer Paul “Flip” Mills. We’re not sure how they’ll celebrate but rumor has it, not a clue if it’s true, the word is that they’re looking into producing bobble heads of the band members.
