Words of Grace – May 29, 2014

WordsOfGraceThe Lord Jesus Christ, according to the Scriptures, had every reason to be proud. He, “being in the form of God,” was equal with God.” But he made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant” (Philippians 2:6, 7).

In his humiliation he took upon himself the likeness of our sinful flesh, “and became obedient unto death, even the death of cross” (v.8). It has been said that the life and death of Christ are a standing rebuke to every form of pride to which men are liable.

Pride of birth and rank: Jesus was known as “the carpenter’s son.”

Pride of wealth: Jesus had no place “to lay his head.”

Pride of respectability: Jesus came “out of Nazareth.”

Pride of appearance: Jesus had “no form or comeliness.”

Pride of reputation: Jesus was “a friend of publicans and sinners.”

Pride of learning: Jesus knew not “letters, having never learned.”

Pride of superiority: Jesus was among people “as he that serveth.”

Pride of success: Jesus was “despised and rejected of men.”

Pride of ability: Jesus could of his “own self do nothing.”
Pride of self-will: Jesus said. “I seek not mine own will, but the will of Him that sent me.”
